QUICK TIME

Wasn’t it just yesterday
When you and I – ran naked to the river
Joyous in its cool embrace
Droplets on our faces sparkled and magnified
Skin so perfect – reflecting youth and vigour.
Twenty years and more gone by - how can that time
Weigh so heavy now - with the sweet smell
Of that summer still lingering
When I’m almost sure – if I turn quickly
I could see the river still – our footprints
Wet on those rounded rocks
Years somehow have slipped between
Wedging somehow into the swirling grain of our lives
Til that day and this have separated afar
When I see your face - the change to grey
Seems sudden - and my face
Belongs to a stanger
